modern era addiction
We work longer hours each year. Also, we spend an average of
three hours each day using our smartphones. Half of us would rather suffer from
a broken bone than a broken phone. That’s hilarious but true! Kids spend lot of
time in front of screens that they struggle to interact with real, live humans.
Facebook has an endless feed; Netflix automatically moves on
to next episode in the series. Instagram encourages keeping swiping. We benefit
from these apps and websites but also struggle to use them in moderation.
Behavioral addictions are high in this century. Almost all
of us are addicted to one or more behaviors. Addiction is produced largely by
environment and circumstances. There isn’t a bright line between addicts and
the rest of us. We’re all one product or experience away from our own
addictions.
Technology offers convenience, speed and automation, but it
also brings large costs. Human behavior is spending on that huge cost.
Addictive behaviors have existed for a long time, but in
recent decades, they are in mainstream. These modern addictions don’t directly
involve the intake of any substance. They don’t directly introduce chemicals in
your system. But they produce the same effects because they are compelling and
well designed. Some, like gambling and exercise are old, smartphone use is
relatively new. But they’ve all become progressively more difficult to resist.
Technology isn’t good
or bad until wielded by the corporations that tailor it for mass consumption.
In many aspects, substance addiction and behavioral addictions are similar.
They activate the same brain regions that likely to develop addictions.
Millions of recovering alcoholics manage to avoid bars
altogether, but recovering from internet addicts can’t avoid it completely. The
use of digital media is unavoidable in this modern age. So, staying away is not
an option but finding other alternatives to be aware is important.
Meanwhile, once you understand how behavioral addictions
work, you can mitigate their harm, or even harness them for good. Addictions are
damaging because they crowd out other essential pursuits in life. There’s much
we can do to regain the balance that existed before the age of smartphones and
social networking.
What can we do to survive in this technology era of digital
addiction?
By reverse engineering behavioral addiction, we can use
addictive products to improve our lives. Thinking and then applying on how we
communicate with each other, spend and save our money, balance between work and
entertainment can change your addictiveness towards it.
In late 2010, Steve Jobs told in one of his interviews that
his children had never used iPad. All the tech giants imposed similar
restrictions. Chris Anderson, the former editor of WIRED, enforced strict
limits on every device in his home. He says, ‘because we have seen the dangers
of technology firsthand.’ His five children were never allowed to use screens
in their bedrooms.
Evan Williams, a founder of blogger, twitter bought hundreds
of books for his two young sons but refused to give them an iPad. Lesely Gold,
the founder of an analytics company, imposed a strict ‘no screen time during
the week’ rule on her kids. She softened her stance only when they needed
computers for schoolwork.
Several video game designers agreed that they avoided the
notoriously addictive game world. It
seemed as if these people were following the cardinal rule of drug dealing:
never get high on your own supply.
An exercise addiction psychologist called fitness watches
are dangerous and swore that she’d never buy one. The founder of internet
addiction clinic told that she avoids gadgets newer than three years old. Also,
she has never used her phone’s ringetone , and deliberately ‘misplaces’ her
phone so she isn’t temped to check her mail.
The list of addictions is longer than it’s ever been in
human history. Compared to the clunky tech of the 1990s and early 2000s, modern
tech is efficient and addictive. Understand the problem and evaluate with your
own mental powers. Secure your children and their bright future. Secure
yourself from being the victim of modern world addiction.
